The OVMRC bought a new computer for Console #2 this week. It is a dual core, 3.1 GHz machine that should be much more capable of running the various software we use. Upgrading the computer is part of an ongoing modernization process at VE3JW, that has included the acquisition of some new radios as well.
Being radio amateurs, we don’t just toss the old machine though. The old Console #2 has been reimaged with Ubuntu Linux and will be put back into service as a training and test machine for use at the station. It may find other uses as the situation permits.
Older computers that don’t really have the horsepower to run a modern version of Windows very well often handle Linux easily. This article is, in fact, being written from the old Console #2 in Firefox on Linux.
