If you’ve recently entered the world of amateur radio, you’re probably wondering where to start with equipment. Many people ask questions about what equipment to buy when they come by VE3JW. This article, by VE3OIJ, lays out some pretty good basics for what to consider when acquiring starting equipment.

If you’re a new amateur, or considering becoming an amateur, that article is good reading material!

That article uses Radioworld as the benchmark for prices, but all the equipment in there is available at Elkel Electronics.

VE3JW is supported by the Ottawa Valley Mobile Radio Club. Although the club is very generous, it is constrained by budgets – the VE3JW exhibit is but one activity that the club must spend money on.

Consequently, it is necessary to appeal to private and corporate donors to help with our mission of providing a top-notch amateur radio exhibit. We cannot offer a tax receipt for donations as we are not a charity, but we can offer recognition on this web site, in the OVMRC newsletter, by displaying business cards of the donor, or having a plaque at the station.

Many individuals contribute personal time to keeping the station running, as I am sure everyone is aware.

Our major donors over the last few years have been Elkel Electronics and Kenwood (together donated a TS-590), and the Canada Science and Technology Museum itself which donates, aside from space and electricity to run the exhibit, new computer monitors and a 56″ LCD display.

Perhaps you can help us? We are looking for certain equipment and would appreciate a donation. Your donation would go toward improving the best amateur radio showcase in Canada. We bring amateur radio to thousands of people every year, especially to the youth who are the future of amateur radio!

Our present needs (as of 9 March, 2012):

<del>- A Yaesu microphone for an FT-857 / FT-897. This would be for use with our FlexRadio SDR that currently has no mic.</del> (Donated by VE3OIJ)

- <del>Two computers</del> One Computer - Our APRS station computer is rather underpowered and difficult to use. We are looking for a newer computer with these sort of specifications: Dual core or better (tri or quad preferred), 2.8 GHz or better, minimum 4 GB RAM, minimum 100 GB hard disk, ethernet (not wireless), sound card, graphics acceleration, Windows 7 preferred. (New computer for satellite station purchased by OVMRC).

- 200 feet of 50-ohm coaxial cable (LMR-400 or similar). Some of our coaxial cable has been outside for decades and needs to be replaced.

If you think you could support us, please feel free to contact the station manager at ve3jw1@gmail.com

WELCOME TO OUR AMATEUR RADIO HOME PAGE

We invite any licensed Radio Amateurs to come in and operate our fine station.

Visitors to our station will be introduced to Amateur Radio through demonstrations of the many modes of operations in HF, VHF, UHF and beyond.

On this site, we will: cover the origin of our Radio Station VE3JW; list the Radio Amateurs involved in operating, teaching, and demonstrating Amateur Radio; provide their schedule of attendance at the station; and show the many events taking place at the exhibit station.

This picture shows the three faces of our VE3JW station, from left to right, the VHF/UHF Console, the Satellite Console, and the HF Console. A list of equipment and antennas is found further down this site.
